Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I sign up?

You don't! Just show up! Check the Locations page to find out where and when to show up.

What is the difference between the MP3 Experiment and the MP3-EXPerience?

MP3 Experiment is an annual event in NYC from performing arts and prankster group, Improv Everywhere. After experiencing it first hand, the creator of this website decided something needed to be done to bring the exuberant people-connecting experience to those outside of NYC. MP3 Experience (or MP3-EXP for short) was created with a similar goal as the NYC MP3 Experiment but in a format that can be packaged and deployed by anyone, anywhere, anytime people are willing to come together.

Is there an age range for participation?

Anyone of any age is welcomed to participate. Keep in mind the event takes place in a park and some of the activities will not be possible by people with limited mobility.

T he humor is appropriate for most ages- with some of the randier jokes intended to go over the younger ones heads. If you are a concerned parent feel free to listen to the track before allowing your kids to participate- do so knowing it will ruin a lot of the fun for you if you plan on participating too. If you're ok with your kids watching the Shrek films you should feel comfortable with them playing at MP3-EXP.

Is there a signal or anything to let me know when to press play?

No- you simply press play when the clock strikes the pre-determined time. For this reason you must sync your timepiece (one with a seconds display/hand) to the clock on this website listed on the Instructions page.

Will any kind of MP3 player work? What about Zune? iPod?

Yes- any portable audio player will work. Refer to its instruction manual or a tech savvy friend if you need assistance with downloading and transferring the file to your player. Be sure you can find it on your player before you leave for the event. We suggest created a special playlist just for the file so it's easy to find quickly.

What if I don't press it on time?

It is very important you press Play as close to the exact second as possible- but if some unforeseen circumstance causes your player to wig out or your watch to break simply use pause/fastfoward/rewind to get as close to everyone else as possible. It could be helpful to look at a fellow participants player to see what track time their display reads.

What if I don't make it on time?

We suggest showing up at least 10 minutes early- simply find a comfy spot in the park and enjoy mother nature. If you are running more than 5 minutes late you will miss out on some serious fun. The activities start after about 5 minutes of audio exposition. If you are running late but think you can still make it for part of the event press play at the specified time anyway and just join in when you arrive.

What if I accidentally skip the track or rewind etc during the event?

Switching the Hold button on your player (90% of MP3 player have this) will disable all the buttons on your player till you release/repress it. This is to prevent you from accidentally exiting the audio track while it is playing. If you don't see a hold button or switch refer to your product manual.

What if my battery dies?

Obviously you should make sure you show up with a full charge. It would be really unfortunate if something like this happened- but you're S.O.L. Why not just play along like nothing happened? You should be able to figure out most activities by observing others. Either that or grab a snack and enjoy the show.

Do I need to wear the same color shirt as my friends/family?

Only if you don't want to be separated for certain activities. If your family has tendencies to embarrass you in public then tell them to all wear red then switch to your yellow-undershirt at the last minute. If you love your family like a well adjusted individual or you are bringing children please wear the same color shirt as them.

Can I share my mp3 player- as in one ear bud per person?

No- different audio comes from the left and right channels, so you can't split your earbuds. If you only have one mp3 player consider picking up an audio jack splitter and a 2nd set of headphones- or if you don't like being the ball and chain of the mp3 holder just get a cheap mp3 player. It'll be much more fun that way.
